12-11-2009 News Release 09/230

Geneva (ICRC) – At its Assembly meeting of 11 November, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) appointed Yves Daccord to the post of director-general.

Mr Daccord will take up his responsibilities as head of the Directorate, the ICRC's executive body, on 1 July 2010. Following Mr Daccord's appointment, the Assembly expressed its gratitude to the current director-general, Angelo Gnaedinger, who had decided not to seek a new mandate.

Mr Daccord was born in 1964 and holds a degree in political science. Early in his career, he worked as a journalist at the Télévision Suisse Romande in Geneva. He joined the ICRC in 1992 and carried out a number of assignments in the Middle East, Africa and the Caucasus before holding senior positions at the ICRC's Geneva headquarters, mostly in the field of promoting international humanitarian law and in communication. Since 2002, Mr Daccord has been the ICRC's director of communication and a member of the ICRC Directorate.
