Ethiopia: ICRC conducts national workshop on human rights law with police
27-04-2007 News Release
The ICRC held a national evaluation workshop on human rights law for 22 instructors of the police force. The event was jointly organized in Sendafa with the Federal Police College.
The following was issued as a press release by the ICRC delegation in Addis Ababa on 25 April 2007
The participants, who came from the Ethiopian Police College and regional training centres, had already attended an extensive instructors training course in 2005 and a refresher course last year.
On behalf of the participants, Chief Inspector Gashaw Alemayeh said that the Police College and the Regional Police training centres, thanks to the support of the ICRC, have reached sufficient autonomy and capacity to train other police officers in human rights and international humanitarian law (IHL).
The ICRC has trained police instructors for the last five years, supporting the College with teaching material such as training manuals and code of conduct for security forces.
This cycle of training is now successfully completed, but the ICRC will continue to collaborate with the Federal Police College in order to support the ongoing promotion of the fundamental principles of IHL.
