Nepal: Resumption of visits to detainees in military barracks

The following was issued as a press release by the ICRC delegation in Kathmandu on 09 March 2006.

Kathmandu (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Royal Nepalese Army (RNA) have reached an understanding allowing the ICRC to resume its visits to detainees held in RNA barracks countrywide. The visits have started this week.

As in the past, the ICRC will provide the detaining authorities with its confidential findings and recommendations on the conditions of detention in RNA barracks. It wishes to maintain a transparent and open dialogue with the RNA, to the benefit of persons deprived of their liberty.
