South-East and East Asia: Academics promote humanitarian law

At a three-day symposium organized recently by the ICRC’s regional delegation in Kuala Lumpur, 30 leading academics from the law, political science, journalism, human rights and defence studies faculties of various universities in South-East and East Asia pledged to promote the integration of international humanitarian law into curricula, and to work closely with the ICRC to spread knowledge of the law among university students.

Kuala Lumpur - participants at the symposium on promotion of IHL in academic circles 
    The participants, representing universities from China, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Viet Nam, decided to set up the Asian Humanitarian Law Forum, which will facilitate inter-university cooperation and support and promote the exchange of expertise, so as to foster the teaching of humanitarian law in institutions of higher learning.
 
They also shared their experiences of teaching the subject in their respective universities. They agreed that the inclusion of international humanitarian law in many different courses of studies was essential to raising awareness of it a mong tomorrow’s leaders and opinion-makers.
