Rwanda: ICRC trains military instructors in international humanitarian law

From 14 to 18 August 2007, the ICRC and the Rwandan Defence Forces held a joint advanced course on international humanitarian law at Nyakinama military academy in Nord province.

The 20 instructors from various arms of the Rwandan army underwent five days of intensive training on the rules of international humanitarian law, which they then put into practice during exercises and simulations.

The participants had plenty of opportunity to put into practice their newly acquired knowledge in situations such as planning operations, writing orders, evacuating casualties and handling people captured on the battlefield.

These instructors will be working at the army’s training establishments. Since 2000, the ICRC and the Rwandan Defence Forces have trained over 170 instructors from the armed forces in international humanitarian law for.
