Pakistan: ICRC strongly condemns attack on civilians in Lahore

28-05-2010 News Release 10/96

Islamabad/Geneva (ICRC) – Scores of people died in the indiscriminate gunfire of today's attack in Lahore and many others were injured.

" The ICRC strongly condemns such deliberate attacks against civilians, of which the only purpose can be to spread terror among the population, " said Jacques de Maio, the ICRC's head of operations for South Asia.

The Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) is providing life-saving first aid and transporting the wounded to hospital, where medical staff are struggling to cope with the influx of critically injured casualties. The ICRC maintains an office in Lahore, and its staff have provided assistance to their PRCS colleagues and local hospitals as they evacuate and treat the wounded, in the form of two surgical kits for treating people with weapon wounds.

These attacks form part of a highly alarming, unacceptable series of attacks on civilians in Pakistan. The ICRC reiterates its concern regarding the severe impact of armed violence on the people of Pakistan.
