26-08-2011 News Release
Geneva/Beijing (ICRC) – Jakob Kellenberger, the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has just completed a two-day visit to China. Together with Chinese president Hu Jintao, he attended the Florence Nightingale Award Ceremony in Beijing today.
The ICRC president had a meeting yesterday with foreign minister Yang Jiechi, during which the two men exchanged views on the humanitarian situation in some of the ICRC’s main areas of operations, such as Somalia, Libya and Afghanistan, and on the relevance of international humanitarian law in today's conflicts.
Mr Kellenberger also met with Hua Jianming, the president of the Red Cross Society of China, which has long been an important partner of the ICRC, and with other senior officials of the society. During this meeting, Hua Jianming pledged 4 million yuan (about USD 623,000) for ICRC humanitarian action in Somalia and the region.
The Florence Nightingale Medal – the highest international distinction for nurses and voluntary nursing aides – honours exceptional courage and devotion to victims of armed conflict or natural disaster. It also recognizes exemplary service or a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education.
