New TV spot: health workers save lives - keep them safe
09-01-2009 News Release 09/09
Geneva (ICRC) - A new TV spot is being released today calling for greater protection for health workers in armed conflict.
Produced by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the spot emphasizes the organization's commitment to ensuring that the sick and wounded have access to health-care services, and the need for safe conditions for health-care workers to carry out their life-saving services. It is especially relevant in view of the heightened attention on this issue in the Gaza conflict.
The 30-second spot contrasts combatants in their protective gear with health workers using their simple tools. Alternating scenes of combatants preparing for battle with health workers caring for the wounded and the sick, it concludes with a battle scene in which health workers – unprotected by flak jackets or weapons – are caught in the crossfire.
" In armed conflicts around the world, civilians suffer terribly and health-care workers face severe challenges doing their work, " said Philippa Parker, Head of the ICRC's Health Unit. " Protecting health workers from attack and facilitating the evacuation and treatment of the sick and wounded – no matter who they are – are basic obligations under international humanitarian law. The TV spot reinforces this crucial message. "
