The ICRC acted in its capacity as a neutral intermediary at the request of the Druze farmers in the occupied Golan, the Syrian and Israeli authorities. At the Kuneitra crossing, representatives of the Israeli authorities and the United Nations observe the loading of ICRC trucks. The operation was coordinated with all the parties concerned, including the United Nations Disengagement Observation Force (UNDOF), which manages the crossing.

Three ICRC trucks made a total of 493 trips, transporting apples produced by around 400 Druze farmers. This operation benefited an estimated 2,500 Druze living in the occupied Golan who rely producing apples as their main source of income.

This is the second time that the ICRC successfully conducted such an operation. The first time was in 2005, when some 4,000 metric tonnes of fruit were transported through the Kuneitra crossing.
