26-04-2006 News Release 06/38
Kathmandu/Geneva (ICRC) – Acting in its capacity as a neutral intermediary, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) today facilitated the release and safe return of two policemen and two civilians held by the Communist Party of Nepal – Maoist.
The four men, three from Makwanpur district and one from Sindhuli district, had been captured in Biruwakuti, Parsa district, on 29 March 2006. The release took place in Kalbi, Bara district. The men were transferred to Hetauda, Makwanpur district, where they were handed over to the chief district officer by a representative of the ICRC, whose confidential bilateral dialogue with the parties to the conflict helped make the operation possible.
In the past, the organization has been instrumental in the release of 205 members of the security forces and the civil service. The latest release operation took place in February 2006 when nine civilians were handed over to the chief justice of Dhankuta.
The ICRC has been working with the parties to the conflict in Nepal since 1998 as an impartial, neutral and independent humanitarian organization whose purpose is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence. It strives to visit detainees held by both parties to the conflict and stands ready to facilitate releases should the parties so request.
