Hong Kong: students compete in 10th moot court competition

Students from 20 universities in the Asia-Pacific region will meet for the 10th Red Cross IHL Moot Court Competition between 8 and 10 March. The friendly-but-serious event is seen as the most important of its kind in the region. Teams from Australia, China, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam will be in Hong Kong, all attempting to wrest the title from Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand.

    This is only the second time Cambodia has participated. The Cambodian team from the Royal University of Law and Economics is raring to compete against fellow law students from Asia in the regional moot, and bring real-life experience of IHL from their own country.

    Mainland China's fifth national round IHL moot took place at Renmin University, Beijing, in November 2011. Xiamen University emerged as the winner, while Nankai University finished second out of 25 teams. China University of Political Science and Law brings the number of teams representing China at the competition to three.

    Eighteen Indonesian universities competed to represent their country in Hong Kong in a competition co-organized by the ICRC and the Indonesian Society of International Law. Farah Nabila was declared best mooter, and her team from Universitas Indonesia will be an interesting competitor.

    Some 20 students from four universities participated in last December's Japanese national round, organized by the International Law Students Exchange Council and the Japanese Red Cross Academy. Kyoto University emerged as winners for the second time in a row.

    The Republic of Korea's third IHL Moot Court competition took place in September 2011 at Seoul National University Law School. Korea University emerged as victors from the competition, which was organized by the law school and the Republic of Korea National Red Cross, so it is they who will be representing their country in Hong Kong.

    Against all odds, the University of Cebu dominated the 2011 National Moot Court Competition in the Philippines. They not only beat 16 teams, including defending champions Silliman University, but swept all the main awards – the first team to do so in the Philippine competition's seven-year history.

    Colombo University's faculty of law has been organizing the Sri Lankan national rounds of the IHL Moot Court since 2005. Colombo were runners-up in the South Asia round behind Shahid Beheshti University from Teheran and both are representing South Asia in Hong Kong.

    Taiwan's third IHL Moot Court competition took place in December at the National Taiwan University, with National Chengchi University emerging as winners.
