Syria: Images of war

15-03-2013 Photo gallery

Fear, pain, the loss of loved ones and the struggle for survival have been a daily reality for many Syrians for two years now, with no end in sight. These photos show just a few examples of the conflict's heavy toll on civilians.

  • Homs governorate. Many Syrian cities have suffered major damage in the fighting. Here the city of Al-Qusayr has been partially destroyed.

  • Al-Qusayr. Wounded people are taken to hospital in Lebanon. Al-Qusayr hospital is unable to cope with the influx of wounded people and is ill equipped to treat them. Patients and those transporting them risk their lives crossing the besieged city.

  • Al-Qusayr. A family takes shelter in the basement of an abandoned school. Their home was destroyed by shells. Like many families without the means to leave the city, they now live in this basement.
