In our efforts to protect and assist victims of conflicts and natural disasters, fight poverty and reduce the impact of diseases, it is essential to join forces.

The ICRC collaborates closely with the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and their International Federation in bringing help to conflict victims, but it also works with other humanitarian organizations and with governments and business partners.

Democratic Republic of the Congo. National Society volunteers unloading aid for 20,000 displaced persons from an ICRC-chartered ship.

Sudan. In a camp for displaced persons, a Sudanese Red Crescent volunteer helps a woman reply to a Red Cross message she received from her husband, a refugee in Chad.

Afghanistan. Afghan Red Crescent and ICRC staff organizing a distribution of essential household items for families whose houses were destroyed by floods.

Haiti. Haitian Red Cross volunteers supported and trained by the ICRC take a maternity case to a hospital run by Médecins Sans Frontières.

Liberia. Families sheltering in a UNHCR transit camp in Liberia after returning home from Guinea, where they had sought refuge. The ICRC provided the families with seed and tools so that they could start farming again and grow their own food.

Azerbaidjan. The ICRC works closely with the World Health Organization in its programmes to control tuberculosis in prisons. In Azerbaijan, these programmes are also carried out in cooperation with the Ministries of Health and Justice, the Red Crescent Society of Azerbaijan, GOPA Consultants and the Royal Netherlands Tuberculosis Association.

Lebanon. Lebanese Red Cross, ICRC and Lebanese civil defence staff plan a rescue operation for a family trapped under rubble in the village of Marroub, near Tyre.

Croatia. Inauguration of a secure play area. Many such areas have been built for children in places at risk, some by the Croatian Red Cross in cooperation with business partners and the local authorities, others with the support of sister towns and the ICRC.

Pakistan. Many National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies took part in efforts to help the victims of the devastating earthquake that struck Pakistan in 2005. This picture shows a child being treated at the mobile clinic run by the Japanese Red Cross in Chinari.
