ICRC President outlines major priorities for Iraq

During his visit, on 5 and 6 May 2003, President Kellenberger visited medical facilities and reminded the US representative in charge of the responsibilities of the occupying forces.

On 7 May ICRC President Jakob Kellenberger gave a press conference at the organization’s Geneva headquarters. The main objectives of his visit had been to thank the ICRC staff in Iraq for the work they were accomplishing, to assess medical facilities and to discuss with Mr. Jay Garner, the United States official now in charge of rebuilding Iraq, the responsibilities of the occupying forces.
The ICRC president also identified priorities in the country as being the proper functioning of water and electricity installations, aid to hospitals, the protection of civilians, restoration of family links, tracing of persons unaccounted for and cooperation within the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
