World TB Day, 24 March 2008 - Fighting multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in prisons in KyrgyzstanPrisons in Kyrgyzstan are a breeding ground for the deadly and highly infectious lung disease, tuberculosis. The likelihood of suffering from TB in prisons is 30 times higher than in the general population. More disturbing is the growth in varieties known as MDR – multi drug resistant TB . Such strains do not respond to first level antibiotics and are extremely difficult to treat. According to ICRC experts, 37% of new TB cases in Kyrgyzstan prisons are drug resistant.
