|Title:||Federal law on prohibition of blinding laser weapons, 1998|
|Title in original language:||Bundesgesetz über das Verbot von blindmachenden Laserwaffen|
|Entry into force:||01.01.1998|
This law implements Austria's obligations under Protocol IV to the UN Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons. It prohibits the acquisition, possession, transportation, development, fabrication, trade, mediation in the purchase or in the selling, import and export of blinding laser weapons – as defined in Protocol IV – and their specific parts. Laser systems which may incidentally cause blindness or other damage are excluded from these prohibitions. The law provides for penalties consisting of imprisonment or fines, and for the seizure and forfeiture of the prohibited weapons, their production facilities and means of transport. The Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Justice and of the Interior are responsible for executing the law.
