Case history, Sewing to earn a living

Affected by the consequences of poliomyelitis since her childhood, Ms Tao* joined the VRCS–Spanish Red Cross' vocational training project in 2011, where she learned about the existing legal framework for people with disabilities and her rights and obligations.
After a seven-month course in tailoring and in starting up a small business, she was given a sewing machine to open her own workshop at home in 2012. Now, with an average monthly income of 3.5 million VND (around 165 USD), she not only earns her living, but is also willing to offer training to other people with disabilities who are learning the same skills.

The bilateral orthoses provided by VIETCOT with SFD financial support give her more stability, meaning less effort for walking and operating her sewing machine.
