Asmara/ Addis Ababa (ICRC) - On 11 June, 400 persons were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This number includes a former prisoner of war who recently requested to be repatriated.

On 14 December 2007, 368 persons were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

On 26 October 2007, 835 civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In the same operation, 50 civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea.

On 27 July 2007, 576 civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. Among those repatriated were 13 unaccompanied minors who joined their families in Ethiopia. In addition, 11 civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea.

On 27 April 2007, 431 civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC.

A total of 372 civilians have been repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC.

The ICRC has facilitated the repatriation of 433 civilians between Ethiopia and Eritrea, including 22 unaccompanied minors.

The ICRC has facilitated the repatriation of more than 170 civilians between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

On 11 November 2005, 298 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. The group included 8 unaccompanied minors, 2 elderly persons and 2 sick persons who were returning home to their families.

On 25 February 2005, 160 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

On 26 November, 200 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC. The group crossed the border at the Mereb river bridge, between the towns of Adi Quala in Eritrea and Rama in Ethiopia. Among those repatriated were eight children and three sick persons returning to their families in Ethiopia.

On 19 March, 81 Eritrean civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. The group included a medical case and 12 unaccompanied children who were later reunited with their families.

On 16 and 17 March the ICRC gave two presentations to 20 experienced officers from various detention centres in Asmara.

On 27 February, 155 Ethiopian civilians returned to their country from Eritrea under ICRC auspices.

The ICRC recently donated three new field ambulances, a set of spare parts and other supplies and equipment to the Red Cross Society of Eritrea (RCSE) as part of its longstanding efforts to strengthen the RCSE’s emergency-response programme.

On 19 December, 129 Ethiopian civilians returned from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC. The group crossed the border on a bridge over the Mereb river, between the towns of Adi Quala, in Eritrea, and Rama, on the Ethiopian side.

The scars of the 1998-2000 border conflict with Ethiopia are all too evident in many villages and towns along the Eritrean side of the border.

There are many steps until Ethiopian and Eritrean repatriates can cross the Ethio-Eritrean border. The ICRC as a neutral intermediary helps them to return to their country of origin. Here is a personal story to illustrate these steps.

Last Friday, 77 Eritrean civilians returned from Ethiopia to Eritrea under the auspices of the ICRC. The group crossed the border on a bridge over the Mereb River, between the towns of Rama in Ethiopia and Adi Quala on the Eritrean side. Those repatriated included four minors, who are now back with their families.

On 24 October, 194 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea under ICRC auspices. The group, which included 10 children being reunited with their families, crossed the border on a bridge over the Mereb river between the towns of Adi Quala, on the Eritrean side, and Rama, in Ethiopia.

In two separate operations carried out on 2 and 3 October, eight Eritrean civilians from Ethiopia and one 16-year-old Ethiopian civilian from Eritrea joined their respective families in Asmara and Addis Ababa.

Some 1,000 residents and 1,200 internally displaced persons living in the war-torn village of Endembastifanos no longer need to walk for five hours to fetch drinking water. Now they can get safe water from two public fountains that the ICRC has built in their village.

Three years after the end of the conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia, 16 former soldiers who suffered horrendous face wounds during the hostilities have been operated on by an ICRC surgeon at the Armed Forces General Hospital in Addis Ababa.

Life at the Debai Sima camp is not easy. Set up in a very hot and dry area near the Red Sea port town of Assab, Eritrea, the camp houses over 200 Afar families. Entire villages previously inhabited by this ethnic group were destroyed during the 1998-2000 war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, forcing the residents to flee.

Four trucks loaded with plastic sheeting and thousands of blankets have reached Zalambessa, a border town destroyed during the Ethiopian-Eritrean conflict. The first 1,200 families returning home to rebuild their houses will use the sheeting to build temporary shelters.

A total of 213 Ethiopian and 6 Eritrean civilians were repatriated to their respective countries under ICRC auspices in two simultaneous operations on 22 August.

In drought-affected Eritrea, the ICRC has completed its seed and food distributions to families who were displaced during the border war with Ethiopia.

A total of 153 Ethiopian and 75 Eritrean civilians were repatriated to their respective countries under ICRC auspices in two separate operations on 13 and 17 June.

The ICRC has completed its seed and food distributions in the region of Debub, Eritrea. Some 10,000 farming families displaced during the border war with Ethiopia were able to return recently, but were facing difficult conditions. Together, they have received 250 tonnes of cereal seed and almost 640 tonnes of food.

In drought-affected Eritrea, the ICRC has distributed 115 tonnes of cereal seed so far this year to farming families who were displaced during the 1998-2000 border war with Ethiopia.

Five Eritreans were repatriated from Ethiopia today under ICRC auspices. Given the fragile state of health of some of them, ICRC medical staff accompanied them on the flight from Addis Ababa to Asmara via Nairobi.

A severe drought is currently affecting several countries in the Horn of Africa. In Eritrea, the ICRC has begun distributing cereal seed to families who were displaced during the border war with Ethiopia (1998-2000).

Daniel can hardly hold back his tears. He just has arrived at Asmara International Airport and is being greeted by his mother Haimanot, whom he has not seen for 13 years.

On 28 February, 136 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea under the auspices of the ICRC. Eight of them were children and teenagers being reunited with their families.

Asmara/Geneva (ICRC) – On Saturday, 28 December, 154 Eritrean civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Geneva (ICRC) – With the recent release of Eritrean prisoners of war (POWs) and civilian internees, the last detainees from the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea who were registered and regularly visited by the ICRC will now be able to go home.

A total of 250 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under ICRC auspices on 8 November.

Geneva (ICRC) - A group of 279 Ethiopian prisoners of war returned to their country on 29 August under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Geneva (ICRC) – The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr Jakob Kellenberger, has today completed his first visit to the region since the end of the international armed conflict between the two countries in 2000.

Geneva (ICRC) – The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr Jakob Kellenberger, is on his way to pay official visits to Eritrea and Ethiopia. He plans to meet with Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki in Asmara and with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and other Ethiopian officials in Addis Ababa.

A three-day workshop was held in Addis Ababa from July 29 to 31 to review the ambulance manual of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS). Some 50 mayors or their representatives from municipalities across the country and 35 secretaries of ERCS branches and sub-branches with ambulance stations took part in the event.

Geneva (ICRC) – On Friday, 2 August 2002, 15 Ethiopian prisoners of war (POWs) were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

Eleven senior officers of the Eritrean Defence Forces (EDF) and three of the country's senior police officers took part in a seminar on international humanitarian law, which lays down the rules of war, on 18 July in Asmara.
