Asmara/ Addis Ababa (ICRC) - On 11 June, 400 persons were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This number includes a former prisoner of war who recently requested to be repatriated.

Addis Ababa (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has organized a two-day workshop on the future of its cooperation with the Ethiopian government's regional labour and social affairs bureaux, six physical rehabilitation centres and three non-governmental organizations.

Addis Ababa (ICRC) – On 15 and 16 April, 100 legal advisers of the Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF) took part in a workshop on international humanitarian law (IHL) organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Addis Ababa. The participants came from several ENDF units in Addis Ababa, regional commands and training centres, and from all divisions around the country.

On 14 December 2007, 368 persons were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

On 26 October 2007, 835 civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). In the same operation, 50 civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea.

On 27 July 2007, 576 civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. Among those repatriated were 13 unaccompanied minors who joined their families in Ethiopia. In addition, 11 civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia to Eritrea.

ICRC (Geneva) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) deplores the decision by the authorities of Ethiopia's Somali Regional State, where it has been present for over 12 years, to give it seven days' notice to leave.

Geneva (ICRC) – Nine civilians, including seven Chinese nationals working for an oil company in Ethiopia's Somali Regional State, were released at 14.30 p.m. local time today under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

On 27 April 2007, 431 civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC.

The ICRC held a national evaluation workshop on human rights law for 22 instructors of the police force. The event was jointly organized in Sendafa with the Federal Police College.

An epidemic of acute watery diarrhoea broke out in several parts of Ethiopia in June 2006. Since the end of January 2007, 1,150 cases, leading to about 80 deaths, have been recorded north-east of Addis Ababa in the Afar region.

The ICRC held a seminar on war surgery for specialized national medical personnel, working both in civilian and military hospitals.

A total of 372 civilians have been repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC.

Geneva / Addis Ababa (ICRC) – A study by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) identifying 161 rules of customary international humanitarian law was presented at a launch ceremony for the African continent held in Addis Ababa today under the auspices of the African Union.

The ICRC has facilitated the repatriation of 433 civilians between Ethiopia and Eritrea, including 22 unaccompanied minors.

Two ICRC staff members abducted by an armed group in south-eastern Ethiopia were released unharmed at 2.30 p.m. local time today. The two men were handed over to an ICRC team north of Gode in Ethiopia's Somali Regional State.

Drought in the Horn of Africa - latest report on ICRC activities in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya

Nairobi/Geneva - The Horn of Africa's worst drought in a decade has led to acute shortages of water and food, decimated grazing lands and cereal production, and killed large numbers of cattle in the worst affected parts of southern Somalia and in the Somali Regional State in south-eastern Ethiopia.

A conference was held in Addis Ababa last week to discuss how women combatants can help promote humanitarian and human rights norms.

Ten disabled participants sponsored by the ICRC have successfully completed this year's race.

On 11 November 2005, 298 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. The group included 8 unaccompanied minors, 2 elderly persons and 2 sick persons who were returning home to their families.

Nearly 2,000 families in and around the town of Harodibe in south-east Ethiopia's Guradamole have just received ICRC aid, following a similar operation in mid-April.

A total of 163 Eritrean and five Ethiopian civilians were repatriated to their respective countries under ICRC auspices on 10 June

On 11 May the ICRC completed a two-week distribution of maize, beans, oil and agricultural tools to nearly 46,000 displaced people from the Nuer and Anuak communities who had to leave their homes in Ethiopia’s south-western Gambella region earlier this year following renewed clashes among different Nuer communities.

On 12 May the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) and the ICRC finished distributing relief items to 500 families affected by the floods caused by last week's heavy rains in the Somali Regional State.

The ICRC has just finished a two-week distribution of aid to nearly 2,000 displaced and resident families living in and around the town of Harodibe in Ethiopia's south-eastern Somali region.

On 25 February 2005, 160 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

The Ethiopian Federal Police Commission and the ICRC have held a two-day workshop on "Problems and solutions relating to the respect of human rights in the criminal justice system".

On 26 November, 200 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC. The group crossed the border at the Mereb river bridge, between the towns of Adi Quala in Eritrea and Rama in Ethiopia. Among those repatriated were eight children and three sick persons returning to their families in Ethiopia.

On 19 March, 81 Eritrean civilians were repatriated from Ethiopia under ICRC auspices. The group included a medical case and 12 unaccompanied children who were later reunited with their families.

On 27 February, 155 Ethiopian civilians returned to their country from Eritrea under ICRC auspices.

On 19 December, 129 Ethiopian civilians returned from Eritrea to Ethiopia under the auspices of the ICRC. The group crossed the border on a bridge over the Mereb river, between the towns of Adi Quala, in Eritrea, and Rama, on the Ethiopian side.

There are many steps until Ethiopian and Eritrean repatriates can cross the Ethio-Eritrean border. The ICRC as a neutral intermediary helps them to return to their country of origin. Here is a personal story to illustrate these steps.

From 3 to 7 November, a seminar on the law of war brought together for the first time 25 legal advisers from the various branches of the Ethiopian National Defence Forces and from the country's Ministry of Defence and Defence University. The seminar, held at the officers' club in Addis Ababa, was organized by the ICRC in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence.

Last Friday, 77 Eritrean civilians returned from Ethiopia to Eritrea under the auspices of the ICRC. The group crossed the border on a bridge over the Mereb River, between the towns of Rama in Ethiopia and Adi Quala on the Eritrean side. Those repatriated included four minors, who are now back with their families.

On 24 October, 194 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea under ICRC auspices. The group, which included 10 children being reunited with their families, crossed the border on a bridge over the Mereb river between the towns of Adi Quala, on the Eritrean side, and Rama, in Ethiopia.

In two separate operations carried out on 2 and 3 October, eight Eritrean civilians from Ethiopia and one 16-year-old Ethiopian civilian from Eritrea joined their respective families in Asmara and Addis Ababa.

Three years after the end of the conflict between Eritrea and Ethiopia, 16 former soldiers who suffered horrendous face wounds during the hostilities have been operated on by an ICRC surgeon at the Armed Forces General Hospital in Addis Ababa.

Life at the Debai Sima camp is not easy. Set up in a very hot and dry area near the Red Sea port town of Assab, Eritrea, the camp houses over 200 Afar families. Entire villages previously inhabited by this ethnic group were destroyed during the 1998-2000 war between Eritrea and Ethiopia, forcing the residents to flee.

Four trucks loaded with plastic sheeting and thousands of blankets have reached Zalambessa, a border town destroyed during the Ethiopian-Eritrean conflict. The first 1,200 families returning home to rebuild their houses will use the sheeting to build temporary shelters.

A total of 213 Ethiopian and 6 Eritrean civilians were repatriated to their respective countries under ICRC auspices in two simultaneous operations on 22 August.

Geneva / Addis Ababa (ICRC) – A round-table discussion on the effects of armed conflict on women and the family, jointly organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Addis Ababa University, was held in the Ethiopian capital on 30 June.

A total of 153 Ethiopian and 75 Eritrean civilians were repatriated to their respective countries under ICRC auspices in two separate operations on 13 and 17 June.

The roads leading to the flooded areas of the Somali National Regional State are gradually becoming passable, enabling ICRC aid to reach the more isolated places along the Wabe Shebelle river.

The ICRC has launched an emergency operation to assist the victims of flooding along the Wabe Shabelle river, in the districts of Kelafo and Mustahil, Somali National Regional State (SNRS).

The first corps-level course in Ethiopia for law of armed conflict (LOAC) instructors has just come to an end in Awassa.

The emergency food-aid operation jointly launched in February by the ICRC and the Ethiopian Red Cross is being pursued in various parts of the country so as to reduce the risk of famine among farmers and herders living in areas affected by last year's drought.

Five Eritreans were repatriated from Ethiopia today under ICRC auspices. Given the fragile state of health of some of them, ICRC medical staff accompanied them on the flight from Addis Ababa to Asmara via Nairobi.

Daniel can hardly hold back his tears. He just has arrived at Asmara International Airport and is being greeted by his mother Haimanot, whom he has not seen for 13 years.

"Let it rain!" exclaimed Steve Williams, poking his head around the door to his small room, "let it pour!". The ICRC delegate in charge of assistance programmes in western Hararghe province had been waiting for this moment for a long time.

A series of courses on international humanitarian law was held last week for officers of the Ethiopian air force in Debre Zeit, an important step towards incorporating the law of war into the country's regular military training.

The ICRC has handed 10 new ambulances over to the Ethiopian Red Cross Society. The donation is intended to help build a countrywide Red Cross ambulance fleet capable of adequately serving the large African country.

On 28 February, 136 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea under the auspices of the ICRC. Eight of them were children and teenagers being reunited with their families.

Geneva/Addis Ababa (ICRC/ERCS) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) started a major assistance operation today, Thursday 20 February, stepping up their relief effort to assist 700,000 victims of the drought that has hit Ethiopia.

Around 1,000 displaced families settled in various localities in eastern Tigray have received construction materials so that they can rebuild their houses, which were destroyed or damaged during the recent armed conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea.

The ICRC and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society recently began a third round of food distributions for some 112,000 people, mainly nomadic herders, at several locations in Afar and Somali regional states.

In the past few days, staff and volunteers of the Bale branch of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, aided by ICRC personnel, have distributed emergency non-food relief supplies to some 36,000 displaced people in Oromia region’s Bale zone.

Geneva (ICRC) – With the recent release of Eritrean prisoners of war (POWs) and civilian internees, the last detainees from the conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea who were registered and regularly visited by the ICRC will now be able to go home.

A total of 250 Ethiopian civilians were repatriated from Eritrea to Ethiopia under ICRC auspices on 8 November.

On 12 October, in Harar, Alain Aeschlimann, ICRC head of delegation in Ethiopia, presented a locally adapted handbook for the ICRC's "Exploring Humanitarian Law" programme to Ato Fuad Ibrahim, President of the Harari People's National Regional State.

Addis Ababa - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) started a major relief operation to provide emergency food assistance to some 100.000 people, mainly pastoralists, living in villages of Zone 3 of the Afar Regional State and Afdem and Mieso Woredas of Shinile Zone of the Somali Regional State.

Geneva (ICRC) – The President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr Jakob Kellenberger, has today completed his first visit to the region since the end of the international armed conflict between the two countries in 2000.

He plans to meet with Eritrean President Isaias Afewerki in Asmara and with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and other Ethiopian officials in Addis Ababa.

A three-day workshop was held in Addis Ababa from July 29 to 31 to review the ambulance manual of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS). Some 50 mayors or their representatives from municipalities across the country and 35 secretaries of ERCS branches and sub-branches with ambulance stations took part in the event.
