N’Djamena (ICRC) – Today, 8 May, the delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Chad is celebrating not only World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day but also the 30th anniversary of its humanitarian work in the country.

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement strongly condemns the abduction and murder of a volunteer of the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society in Jaffna on 14 December.

The 30th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent ended with a commitment from some 1,500 representatives of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and of States party to the Geneva Conventions to stronger collaborative humanitarian action.

The 29th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent has amended the Statutes of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement to incorporate the additional emblem of the red crystal, which now has the same status as the red cross and red crescent. In addition the participants to the International Conference requested that the ICRC and the International Federation recognize and admit the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PCRS) into the Movement.

The 29th International Conference of the Red Cross and Red Crescent will open on 20 June at the international conference centre in Geneva.

The Henry Dunant Medal for humanitarian service, the highest distinction of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, was awarded to four people at a ceremony held in Geneva on 30 November 2003.

Geneva (ICRC) – At its meeting on 20 November 2003, the Assembly of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) formally recognised the Kazakh Red Crescent Society and the Micronesia Red Cross Society. These two societies are the 180th and 181st National Societies to join the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
