On 10 July the ICRC and the Ministry of Education of Trinidad and Tobago concluded an agreement in which they jointly undertook to implement the ICRC's Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) programme in the country's secondary schools.

Geneva (ICRC) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has launched a new website for teachers of its Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) programme, which is designed to introduce secondary-school students to the basic rules and principles of international humanitarian law.

Ljubljana will turn into Central Europe's capital of international humanitarian law (IHL) from 13 to 18 November 2006. The city will host a students' competition on IHL, a meeting of professors from 20 universities of Central Europe who teach humanitarian law, and an international conference on current challenges to the law of armed conflicts.

Prominent scholars and experts in the field of international humanitarian law (IHL) gathered in Samarqand from 22 October to 30 October to teach a nine-day course for students and young lecturers of Central Asia.

Geneva (ICRC) – Senior officials from the education ministries of 22 European countries are meeting in Vienna today with Red Cross / Red Crescent education specialists to discuss practical ways of introducing international humanitarian law into the curricula of secondary schools.

The fourth regional meeting on the educational programme “Exploring Humanitarian Law” (EHL) took place in Tunis from 3 to 7 April 2006 at the initiative of the Tunisian ministry of education and training and of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), with the support of the League of Arab States.

The ICRC is marking the 10th anniversary of its educational programme in Georgia, which teaches secondary school pupils the basic rules of international humanitarian law.

Four playrooms for three-to-six-year-old children of Chechnya opened their doors today in Grozny. They were set up in temporary accommodation facilities by the Russian Red Cross with ICRC support.

On 6 October the ICRC and the Yemeni educational authorities concluded a workshop held in Sana'a to train secondary-school teachers to implement Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL), a programme intended to familiarize young people with the basic principles of international humanitarian law.

An exhibition of children’s drawings entitled “Inter arma caritas: Mercy on the battlefield” opened yesterday in one of the world’s most famous galleries – the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, in Moscow.

On 26 March the Ministries of Public Education and of Higher and Secondary Specialized Education of Uzbekistan, the ICRC and the Red Crescent Society of Uzbekistan signed an agreement that sets a handover date for a programme that the ICRC has been supporting for several years and that is aimed at spreading knowledge of international humanitarian law in the country’s secondary schools and universities.

On 9 March the Ministry of Education of the Kyrgyz Republic, the ICRC regional delegation for Central Asia and the Red Crescent Society of Kyrgyzstan signed a cooperation agreement aimed at ensuring a sustainable professional basis for teaching international humanitarian law in the country’s secondary schools and institutions of higher education.

Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) is an ICRC programme that introduces young people to the basic rules of international humanitarian law and helps them embrace principles of humanity in their daily lives and the way they assess events at home and abroad. A pilot EHL programme is to start in Serbia next month, and throughout the coming school year over 1,000 students at 18 secondary schools in Belgrade will be debating humanitarian perspectives, rules to limit suffering in conflict and violence, responsibility for breaches of the rules, justice at work and the ethics and practice of humanitarian work.

The ICRC has organized a seminar for education specialists from government and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies around the world to discuss the study of international humanitarian law and related issues in secondary schools. The event was held in Budapest from 5 to 11 July for over 100 participants from 39 countries.

On 16 April the ICRC signed a memorandum of understanding with the Palestinian Authority aimed at introducing the Exploring Humanitarian Law (EHL) programme into the Palestinian educational system.

A new literature handbook entitled Man for Man and the teacher's guide that goes along with it, both produced by the ICRC, have just come off the printing press.

On 12 October, in Harar, Alain Aeschlimann, ICRC head of delegation in Ethiopia, presented a locally adapted handbook for the ICRC's "Exploring Humanitarian Law" programme to Ato Fuad Ibrahim, President of the Harari People's National Regional State.

This week, pupils and teachers in 80 regions of the Russian Federation are starting the winter term with a new school manual developed and produced by the ICRC.
