| 3-11-2006 Photo Collection Democratic Republic of the Congo: saving lives, rebuilding livelihoods This gallery contains images and excerpts from a new ICRC photo exhibition that provides a fresh look at the humanitarian situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It depicts the central human concerns arising out of years of violence in which hundreds of thousands of people lost their lives, focusing on key issues such as child soldiers, sexual violence, health, water, economic security, helping abandoned communities, reuniting families and 'fighting right', and provides an overview of what the ICRC is doing to tackle these challenges.

Help for abandoned communities
Kilumbe, Mituaba, Misebo, Mabwe, Kalelwa – so many tiny dots on the map of one of the most mineral-rich provinces in the DRC. Object of everyone’s desire, this wealth has doomed Katanga, and the result can be seen on people’s faces and bodies, and on the landscape: the shells of burnt-out houses, the terrified looks of civilians, the chronically undernourished children…
The ICRC was able to reach Kilumbe with relief supplies in May 2006. The primary aim of such an assistance operation is to protect the victims’ lives and health. The ICRC receives support from the European Commission to help restore economic security in the region.
