Women and displacement: bearing the burden
Women bear the brunt of the burden of displacement, having to strike a delicate balance between the risks they run in often hostile environments and the imperative to provide for the immediate needs of the family. This gallery provides a glimpse of contexts from around the world in which the ICRC is active and in which courageous women come together in their struggle to survive in sometimes impossibly difficult environments.

Woman whose husband has been killed by an armed group – Colombia continues to be plagued by an internal conflict that has spanned decades and cost thousands of lives. This woman’s husband was executed in front of her and her 3-year-old in their kitchen by an armed group. Mother and pregnant widow at 18, she left her home, not able to carry on in the place her husband was killed. In 2006 alone, the ICRC assisted more than 67,000 newly displaced people in Colombia.
