Women and displacement: bearing the burden
Women bear the brunt of the burden of displacement, having to strike a delicate balance between the risks they run in often hostile environments and the imperative to provide for the immediate needs of the family. This gallery provides a glimpse of contexts from around the world in which the ICRC is active and in which courageous women come together in their struggle to survive in sometimes impossibly difficult environments.

Internally displaced women preparing a meal in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka – Over 200,000 people have been displaced in the latest outbreaks of violence in northern and eastern Sri Lanka between the national armed forces and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). In situations of displacement, women often become the anchors of their families and communities. Their strength is in their ability to get organized, within the household and with other women on whose solidarity they can count. The ICRC has assisted over 100,000 IDPs in Sri Lanka since early 2006 with essential household items and drinking water.
