Women and displacement: bearing the burden
Women bear the brunt of the burden of displacement, having to strike a delicate balance between the risks they run in often hostile environments and the imperative to provide for the immediate needs of the family. This gallery provides a glimpse of contexts from around the world in which the ICRC is active and in which courageous women come together in their struggle to survive in sometimes impossibly difficult environments.

Women carrying firewood in Arum camp for displaced persons, Pader District, Uganda – Women are severely affected by displacement. They are at risk from violence and exploitation, no longer benefiting from certain traditional protection mechanisms. With limited access to agricultural land women take on the responsibility of feeding their families without the support of the men in their lives who have often lost their role as the main economic provider. It is estimated that the conflict in Uganda has forced over 1.7 million people to live in camps for the displaced. The ICRC is currently striving to improve the living conditions of some 770,000 people in 64 camps by means of water, sanitation, health and material aid programmes.
