Women and displacement: bearing the burden
Women bear the brunt of the burden of displacement, having to strike a delicate balance between the risks they run in often hostile environments and the imperative to provide for the immediate needs of the family. This gallery provides a glimpse of contexts from around the world in which the ICRC is active and in which courageous women come together in their struggle to survive in sometimes impossibly difficult environments.

Internally displaced persons centre in Altievo village, Ingushetia, Northern Caucasus – Some ICRC programmes designed to help women recover their means of production involve specific projects such as livestock rearing, market gardening or the operation of mills, together with training in different domains appropriate to the prevailing economic environment. In 2006 the ICRC came to the aid of over 13,000 of the most vulnerable IDPs from Chechnya in Ingushetia and some 6,600 displaced people in Daghestan. A considerable portion of the displaced population in both Ingushetia and Daghestan are planning to settle in the republics and integrate with host communities.
