Registering displaced persons eligible for ICRC aid programme in Cocorna village, Colombia – Colombia continues to be torn apart by an internal conflict that has spanned decades. The situation has deteriorated in the last few years, with the government stepping up its offensive against armed groups and placing ever-larger zones of territory under military control. In 2006, the ICRC assisted more than 67,000 newly displaced people. In collaboration with the Colombian Red Cross, the organization distributed emergency assistance that included food and hygiene parcels, bedding, dishes and cooking utensils, covering basic needs over a three-month period (six months for female-headed households).
