Shanty town on the outskirts of Bogotá – Los altos de Cazuca – Since 1985, it is estimated that up to three million Colombians have been forced to leave their homes because of the violence, making them the third largest internally displaced population in the world. Displacement is often a deliberate strategy of armed groups rather than a by-product of the conflict. Those from affected rural areas end up in poverty belts surrounding the major cities, unable for the most part to find work to support their families. It is estimated that about 45% of the displaced are children between the ages of 5 and 14 and that most of these never return to school.
