Displaced people receiving basic necessities in Shali, Chechnya – Some 50,000 residents and displaced people in Chechnya receive ICRC relief aid. Those most in need lack essential wares, including hygiene items, mattresses, bedsheets, blankets, candles, buckets and shoes. Through microeconomic projects, the ICRC has supported several hundred families in starting small family businesses, allowing them to generate stable incomes and decrease dependence on humanitarian assistance. These livelihood projects were expanded to Ingushetia and Daghestan in 2006. A considerable proportion of the displaced population in both Ingushetia and Daghestan are planning to settle in the republics and integrate with host communities.
