Volunteers of the Red Cross of the Democratic Republic of the Congo unload a plane during a non-food relief distribution in Shabunda, South Kivu province – In July 2006 the ICRC distributed emergency relief items to 11,000 displaced people who had fled hostilities in Shabunda. The families had left their villages two months before due to deteriorating security conditions, losing most of their belongings while fleeing. In 2006, the ICRC met the basic needs of some 160,000 civilians, including providing seed and fishing equipment to farming and fishing family associations.
