An abandoned flooded village in the Marere district of Somalia – Over 500,000 Somalis have been affected by the floods. The few fields with crops that escaped the severe drought of the first half of 2006 have been destroyed. The inhabitants of this village escaped to the Belet Wayne IDP camp, where the ICRC is focusing on supplying 100,000 litres of drinking water per day to the 45,000 inhabitants of the camp. When a flood disaster strikes, access to drinking water is vital in order to prevent the spread of water-borne diseases such as cholera, diarrhoea and malaria. Since the beginning of the floods in November, the ICRC has supplied waterproof sheeting to help some 330,000 flood victims protect themselves from the bad weather, as well as equipment for the production and distribution of drinking water, mosquito nets, blankets and seed for replanting once the water recedes.
