People waiting for an ICRC water truck to arrive in the over-populated Gereida camp – Approximately 120,000 people live in this camp for displaced people, one of many strewn across the Darfur region of western Sudan. Many people have been here for more than two years and have built fragile homes that shelter them from the harsh conditions. The ICRC distributes food and water and runs a health care centre in this camp. Many of those in isolated rural communities are also exposed, with the violence making it impossible for them to plant crops or tend to their livestock. The ICRC strives to deliver seeds, tools and other items that can generate income to members of these communities, who might otherwise add to the numbers of the displaced.
