Cité-Soleil: grinding poverty, relentless violence
Built in the 1960s to house a few thousand workers, Cité-Soleil is now one of the largest shantytowns in the northern hemisphere and a microcosm of all the ills that beset Haitian society: endemic unemployment, illiteracy, the collapse of public services, insalubrity, crime and violence.

ICRC employees meeting with representative of an armed groupOnly organizations with a culture of neutrality and independence have managed to convince the armed groups entrenched in Cité-Soleil of the strictly humanitarian nature of their efforts to help victims of violence. Following negotiations with these groups, some ICRC partners that were obliged to pull out of the shantytown for security reasons, such as the waste-collection and water services, have been able to resume their activities.
