Cité-Soleil: grinding poverty, relentless violence
Built in the 1960s to house a few thousand workers, Cité-Soleil is now one of the largest shantytowns in the northern hemisphere and a microcosm of all the ills that beset Haitian society: endemic unemployment, illiteracy, the collapse of public services, insalubrity, crime and violence.

Gate of one of the few schools still open in Cité-SoleilClashes between MINUSTAH and armed groups have claimed numerous victims among the residents of the poorest neighbourhoods in Port-au-Prince. The sign above the gate pleads with weapons bearers to stop shooting. Posters of candidates in the legislative elections of April 2006 are pasted to the gate, attesting to the intensity of the fight for power among the various political parties.
