Some 80,000 litres of water a day are needed to irrigate one hectare of market garden – indicating the importance of these wells. “For each new well, a hole 25 metres deep has to be dug out and made ready – which means 45 days’ work for five people,” says Nicolas Rossier, ICRC delegate in Casamance.
