Peru: turning the right to know into reality
Years after the end of the conflict that rocked Peru in the 1980s, many families still do not know what happened to relatives who disappeared. The ICRC is supporting efforts by a number of State and civil society bodies to end the suffering of these families and to turn their right to know into reality.

An ICRC representative talking to a woman who was captured and tortured along with her husband. He has been missing ever since. A preliminary list drawn up in 2003 by the truth and reconciliation commission, the public prosecutor, the national human rights coordinator and the ICRC initially listed over 7,000 missing persons. The true figure is reckoned to be nearer 13,000.
