Afghanistan – Measured success after decade of Mine-Ban Convention
Ten years ago this December, the Mine-Ban Convention, or Ottawa Convention, was adopted by most of the world’s States. This photo essay explores some of the accomplishments and remaining challenges in one of the most heavily mined countries in the world.

A woman begs in the capital, Kabul. Despite the billions of dollars of foreign aid spent in Afghanistan, many people still face unemployment, crushing poverty and a growing sense of frustration. With the exception of mine clearance, few people in this war-scarred country have seen any tangible improvement in their lives.
