Once mines and other explosives are found they are quickly destroyed. Some 60 percent of the land believed contaminated by landmines and other explosive remnants of war has now been cleared (twelve hundred square kilometers), according to the UN Mine Action Centre for Afghanistan. The numbers of recorded victims were down to 796 in 2006, compared with 1,943 in 2001.
