Somali women and children displaced by fighting cook at a makeshift camp in Jowhar, 90 km north of Somalia's capital Mogadishu, 4 August 2007 – Intensifying armed conflict in Mogadishu in early 2007 prompted the ICRC to step up its humanitarian operations in Somalia. Working closely with the Somali Red Crescent society, the organization concentrated its action primarily on treating the wounded and assisting families forced to flee their homes. The ICRC supplied 350,000 people with essential household items, 210,000 with food and distributed 10 million litres of water to the displaced population of Mogadishu.
