Somalia: the faces of an enduring conflict
In a country ravaged by more than 15 years of armed conflict and natural disasters, the light at the end of the tunnel still seems a long way off. A series of images that show the faces behind the conflict, and what the ICRC is doing to bring relief to its victims.

Women fetching water in the Shebelle river, Jowhar village, Middle Shebelle region, October 2007 – The floods in late 2006 left hundreds of thousands of people without access to clean water. Those who drank untreated river water or water from wells damaged by floods were exposed to various waterborne diseases, including cholera, which spread along the Shebelle river before reaching Mogadishu. With ICRC support, the Somali Red Crescent opened five oral rehydration centres in Mogadishu, cleaned and chlorinated hundreds of wells in Mogadishu and the flood-affected region, supplied chorine tablets, buckets and jerrycans to thousands of people and supported four radio stations to regularly broadcast cholera awareness programmes.
