Central African Republic: a matter of survival for the displaced
Thousands of people in north western Central African Republic abandoned their homes and took refuge in the forest when fighting between government forces and armed rebels broke out in 2006. The ICRC is providing essential household items to over 13,000 families living a precarious existence between stability and flight.

Gérard Kembi’s grandmother Josephine Deko sits in her makeshift shelter in the forest. One of the family’s major concerns is the absence of any health care. When they lived in the village, the hospital in Paoua – the nearest big town – could be reached via a red laterite road in a day’s walk, or in two hours by car. Now that they are living far into the bush, anyone who falls sick has first to be carried along narrow, often muddy forest paths just to get to the road. On the day this photo was taken, one of the children fell into the fire and burnt her arm. With no medicines at hand, and nothing with which to protect it, the wound quickly attracted flies.
