Central African Republic: a matter of survival for the displaced
Thousands of people in north western Central African Republic abandoned their homes and took refuge in the forest when fighting between government forces and armed rebels broke out in 2006. The ICRC is providing essential household items to over 13,000 families living a precarious existence between stability and flight.

Detainees leave their cells in the Bossangoa jail every morning and afternoon to work in shifts in the prison field. The maize, manioc and other staples they are growing will bring variety to their meagre diet. Part of the produce will be sold to generate funds to finance the programme which was the brainchild of the present prison director. The ICRC has supported the programme since it began in May 2007. One of the main benefits of the kitchen garden programme in Bossangoa prison is the chance it gives for the detainees to learn new planting techniques and other good farming tips from an agronomist attached to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Breeding. Most of the detainees are farmers and they will be able to use their new knowledge to improve their own crop yields after they leave jail and return home.
