Memories of Angola
Seven years after the end of the conflict that devastated Angola, the ICRC is scaling back its activities there. In July 2009 it will close its delegation in Luanda, but will continue to monitor the situation in Angola from its delegation in neighbouring South Africa. ICRC staff who worked in war-torn Angola as far back as 1975 share their memories.

Bailundo, therapeutic feeding centre, 1982

"Even today I'm moved when I think of the commitment shown by the ICRC's locally hired employees. There were limits imposed on expatriates – for security reasons we couldn't go to a lot of places. The local employees had to keep the feeding centres going, taking delivery of the relief aid – which arrived in drips and drabs when a train had miraculously managed not to get blown off the tracks by a mine."
Brigitte Meng Comninos, delegate 1980 - 1981
