Memories of Angola
Seven years after the end of the conflict that devastated Angola, the ICRC is scaling back its activities there. In July 2009 it will close its delegation in Luanda, but will continue to monitor the situation in Angola from its delegation in neighbouring South Africa. ICRC staff who worked in war-torn Angola as far back as 1975 share their memories.

Ganda, unloading supplies from an ICRC aircraft

“We had to fly Twin Otters out of Huambo to get to the aid-distribution points. We landed after receiving permission from a group of flag-waving controllers-cum-mine-detectors. If you can imagine – a few men walking barefoot down the landing strip and checking whether it was safe for a plane to touch down. Today I wonder how they ever survived the famine and the mines."

Reto Meister, head of delegation 1986-88.
