Ensuring the future of independent humanitarian action
The ICRC's mandate to provide protection and assistance to people caught up in conflict remains as essential as ever, while its ability to do so depends on a deep and wide-reaching acceptance of its neutrality and independence.

The ICRC has been present in Afghanistan since 1986. An important element of its programme in Afghanistan, as in other parts of the world, is the prevention and treatment of mine injuries, offered to all sections of the community on the basis of need. In Afghanistan over the past 15 years, the ICRC has provided medical assistance to almost 60,000 victims of anti-personnel mines, delivering orthopaedic services and financial and psychological support for those affected to help them reintegrate into society.
