Ensuring the future of independent humanitarian action
The ICRC's mandate to provide protection and assistance to people caught up in conflict remains as essential as ever, while its ability to do so depends on a deep and wide-reaching acceptance of its neutrality and independence.

At the height of the fighting in Liberia in 2003, the ICRC was able to help those affected because all the parties to the conflict accepted the organization's presence and way of working. ICRC medical delegates based at the JFK hospital worked around the clock to treat those hurt in the fighting, while food and other basic necessities were provided to tens of thousands of terrified civilians gathered at a football stadium and other locations in the capital, Monrovia.
