More than 1.2 million people have fled the fighting in North Kivu since the end of 2007. As security improves in a number of regions some of these displaced persons are starting to return home, but many of them are still staying with host families, a situation which exacerbates the difficulties of communities whose living conditions are already precarious. Others survive in makeshift, often overcrowded camps. Most of them are grieving over the death or disappearance of relatives and close friends, are uncertain what has happened to their homes and possessions and are anxious about the future.
Life is touch and go for these displaced persons, who are short of everything. The ICRC and the Red Cross Society of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) are providing the most vulnerable among them and host communities with food, drinking water and agricultural supplies. The two organizations are also supporting hospitals and health centres and are trying to reunite families who have been wrenched apart by the conflict.
