based in Kandahar, Mirwais Hospital – Afghanistan non family posting

Main responsibilities

Together with the ICRC Water and Habitat maintenance responsible, and the hospital maintenance team, to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of the current situation concerning the functioning and maintenance of biomedical equipments.

Main tasks

    Work
  • Fixing broken equipment:
  • Transformer on incubator (Air Shields Vickers)
  • Fans on incubators (MediPrema)
  • Lab centrifuge door switch
  • 2x baby dopplers
  • Surgical cauterizers (Japanese)
  • Various O2 concentrators
  • Visit Kabul repair workshops where medical equipment is sent for repair and assess their capabilities and make a recommendation on whether it is useful/worthwhile to continue to send equipment for repair there. Find workshops where equipment can/should be sent.
  • Design work with OT design team on sterilization equipment

    Stock Ordering
  • Order voltage stabilizers for all equipment sensitive to voltage fluctuations
  • Order spares and consumables for the present equipment in Mirwais such as Oxygen concentrators, pulse oxymeters, suction machines and other essential equipment in the hospital (X-Rays, Sterilizers, OT equipment etc.).

    Training
  • Training hospital maintenance staff on performing complex medical equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Prepare the documentation that the WatHab maintenance technician can use for training.

    Scheduling
  • Building a maintenance schedule for complex medical equipment which the maintenance team can then follow
  • Building a record keeping system for the maintenance system
    Selection requirements

  • Biomedical Engineer, with sound technical expertise in selecting, installing and managing medical equipment at hospital level
  • Technical skills in maintenance repair of bio medical equipment
  • Experienced in teaching and training
  • Ability to put forward in a clear and objective way the options proposed
  • Excellent command of English both oral and written
  • Driving licence (manual – automatic is not sufficient)

  • Flexible, diplomatic and able to work as part of a team
  • Ability and willingness to adapt to Afghan culture, security constraints and security/living restrictions imposed
  • Motivated by humanitarian action
  • Computer skills

Length of assignment 3 to 5 months
