Your task

The work varies, depending on the posting. A health delegate you may be assigned to an ICRC or government-run hospital, working in war surgery or general surgery as a specialist, supervisor, instructor or head nurse. He/she may find assessing the health situation in a community, setting up medical assistance programmes, supporting and supervising local health-care facilities, training local personnel or managing medical supplies. Participation in visits to places of detention is an important part of the health delegate’s role, and involves assessing hygiene conditions, nutrition and detainee health.

Selection requirements
  • ideal age: 30 to 50
  • prepared to accept unaccompanied postings for the first two missions (minimum 12 months each)
  • excellent command of English; French an asset
  • registered nurse (Psychiatric nurses and nurse-midwives must have extensive experience in general medical and surgical care. Nurses with qualifications in maternal and child-health care must have some experience working with adults.)
  • at least five years’ post-graduate experience
  • driving licence (for manual transmission vehicles)
  • fully conversant with IT tools
