An estimated 7,000 Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers gathered in Solferino in June 2009 to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the birth of the idea that led to the creation of the Movement. The momentous occasion is captured here in words and images.

Staff members of the ICRC head out from Geneva on a 500-kilometre run to Solferino, Italy. This is in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the idea, conceived by Henry Dunant, which led to the creation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
